Shiatsu Brighton and Hove

Shiatsu, which literally means ‘finger pressure’, is a form of bodywork therapy that originated in Japan. Like acupuncture, to which it is closely related, it is rooted in the ancient principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The body’s vital energy or Ki flows along specific pathways through the body, known as Meridians. Each Meridian is associated with an internal organ after which it is named, for example the Stomach Meridian or Heart Meridian. During a treatment the practitioner applies pressure along these Meridians using fingers, thumbs, palms, elbows and sometimes knees. Pressure is also applied to specific Acupressure Points located along the paths of the Meridians. This has the effect of releasing and balancing the flow of Ki within the whole body effectively stimulating the body’s own healing response.

How does it work with Massage?

Shiatsu is traditionally performed through clothing with the client lying on a futon mat on the floor. However it is also possible to incorporate Shiatsu techniques into a massage session working directly on the skin and using a massage table or massage chair. I find that incorporating Shiatsu into a Clinical Massage treatment can  help to work more specifically with emotional issues. I also incorporate specific Acupressure Points into every treatment that support the work I am doing with Clinical Massage techniques.

What are the benefits of Shiatsu?

Shiatsu works by regulating the flow of Ki through the Meridians, effectively stimulating the body’s own healing response. Since the Meridian system regulates life functions on all levels of being, Shiatsu can be used to promote well-being in a truly holistic way.
